Recyclable Epoxy Resin from Vegetable Oil

Kar Lun Chong

Resumen

Epoxy resin is a thermoset with superior mechanical and thermal properties, granted by the permanent cross-links in its network. Therefore, epoxy resin is widely used in various applications such as paint and coating industries, adhesives and as a protector for electrical components. However, conventional epoxy resin with permanent cross-linking network is impossible to be recycled, thus, resulting in increasing of burden to the environment for each disposal. Fortunately, recyclable epoxy resin is now a reality, thanks to the discovery of covalent adaptable network (CANS). CANs allow the reformation and breakage of bonds in the epoxy networks, thus, allowing recycling of epoxy resin under elevated temperature.  This review summarizes the recyclable epoxy resin produced from different vegetable oil. Characterization of the epoxy resin with respect to mechanical strength and thermal properties are critically evaluated.
