Los Edwards es una de las familias empresariales más importantes de nuestra historia económica y empresarial. Su trayectoria a lo largo de dos siglos (XIX y XX) permite a rmar que en sus orígenes fue una empresa familiar dedicada a nanciar la minería y la compra y venta de minerales, donde todos los miembros de la familia estaban involucrados en la gestión de los negocios, y que tras formar su fortuna la diversi caron, invirtiendo en bienes urbanos y agrícolas, deviniendo en rentistas. Sin embargo, a principios del siglo XX, la tercera generación, los Edwards Mac Clure, se dividen, fraccionando así el patrimonio en nueve partes, poniendo n a la empresa familiar, y malgastando su patrimonio con un estilo de vida de lujos y viajes a Europa. Siendo solo una rama de la familia, los Edwards Budge, son los que logran mantener su patrimonio con un nuevo estilo de gestión al conformar el denominado Grupo Económico Edwards (1940).Palabras claves: Chile, historia empresarial, familia Edwards.AbstractThe Edwards family is one of the most prominent families in Chile?s business and economic history. Its nineteenth and twentieth centuries? history allow us to argue that, originally, it was a family rm focussed in the funding of both mining and minerals trade. During this stage all members of the family participated in the business management, and after gathering a fortune, they diversi ed the family?s portfolio, investing in rural and urban estates, thus becoming rentiers. However, from the beginning of the twentieth century, the third generation, the Edwards Mac Clure, got divided, fractioning the family?s wealth in nine parts, ending the family rm, and wasting most of the family?s capital in luxuries and travelling through Europe. Eventually, the Edwards Budge, one of the original family branches, managed to keep their capital, with a new management style, creating the so- called Edwards?
