Resumen

Nanocomposites are defined as a promising class of hybrid materials that are mixtures of polymers with inorganic solids at the nanometric scale. Different methods of synthesizing PS - bentonite clay nanocomposites with different surfactants and different polymerization conditions reported in conjunction with the development of polymer - bentonite clay nanocomposites. In addition, bentonite clay nanocomposites with functional polymers were recently introduce as candidate materials that open up a new avenue for polymer - bentonite clay nanocomposite engineering applications. In many applications, these types of materials have been used, such as adsorbents, rheological control agents, paints, grease, cosmetics, personal care products, oil well drilling fluids and many more. In this research project, in ? situ preparation of styrene monomer with organically modified bentonite clay was synthesize by using bulk polymerization technique. PS ? bentonite clay was approach in a new method where different ratio of bentonite loading (1%, 2% and 6%) was used to identify the optimum ratio in synthesizing PS ? bentonite clay. Based on this study, PS ? bentonite clay introduce bentonite ? centyltrimetylammonium bromide (CTAB) as initiator. As a result, ratio 2% showed a polymerization through the homogenous in liquid state. FTIR and TGA analysis was conduct for ratio 2% to confirm the functional group and the thermal stability of PS ? bentonite clay. The result showed that PS ? bentonite clay functional group was appeared in FTIR analysis at the expected peak confirming the inclusion of bentonite clay in the PS matrix. Meanwhile in TGA analysis, PS - bentonite clay 2% was found to have the best thermal stability and at 452.81°C enhancement in the onset temperature. This study suggests that bentonite clay gave enhancement to PS ? bentonite clay through bulk polymerization where centyltrimetylammonium bromide (CTAB) acts as initiatorthesis of highly pure silica nanoparticles that can act as a drug carrier.
