Resumen

The unequal distribution of commerce displaces purchase flows from the smaller centers to those with greater commercial facilities in southern Chile, thus, causing the re-routing of commercial expenditures. To determine the effect of the attraction and restriction variables on the purchase flows of food supplies in Regions VIII, IX and X of Chile, the traditional gravitational model was used. The purchasing center attributes we established were population, monthly domestic income, number of business licenses and the commercial area of establishments selling food. The time and distance of displacement were used as restriction variables. Based on these results, consumers that travel outside their district of origin to buy food supplies choose interurban commercial centers with the greatest population. These centers concentrate people with the greatest incomes, and the commercial supply, determined by number of businesses and area used for retail purposes, was greater in those areas. Consumer income was not a signifi cant interurban deciding factor. This was explained by the small number of commercial facilities that force consumers to travel from their districts of origin to other centers in order to obtain supplies.
