Resumen
Este trabalho procura enunciar algumas contradições entre discursos e práticas manifestadas nas intervenções do centro histórico da cidade de São Luís, tendo como objetivo principal analisar quem mais sebeneficiou com a questão da proteção do patrimônio histórico-cultural do centro antigo. Do ponto de vista teórico-metodológico, a pesquisa teve caráter exploratório e descritivo, permeada pela interdisciplinaridade. Foram consultados documentos institucionais relativos ao programa de preservação, partindo para identificaçãoe análise de fatos. Assim, o trabalho ressalta que a prática preservacionista resultou em novas configurações urbanas e funcionou como um lócus privilegiado de oportunidades rentáveis ao poder político, o que acabou legitimando e mantendo o status quo de determinados indivíduos.Palavras-chave: Poder político, patrimônio cultural, preservação, Centro Antigo.PRESERVATION OF THE CULTURAL HERITAGE AS A STRATEGY TO KEEP POLITICAL POWERAbstract: This paper aims to show some contradictions between speeches and practices manifested in the interventions at the Historical Center of São Luís, aiming principally to analyze those who have benefited from the protection of the historic cultural heritage of the old town. From the theoretic methodological point of view the research has an exploratory and descriptive feature permeated by interdisciplinary study. Institutional documents have been studied which are related to the Preservation Program starting from the identification and analyzes of facts. Thus, this study highlights that the preservationist practice resulted in new urban configurationsand it functioned as a place privileged by profitable opportunities to political power, which ended by legitimizing and keeping the status quo of some individuals.Key words: Political power, cultural heritage, conservation, Old Center
